Alcohol in Dubai for tourists: the rules that matter
Can a tourist buy alcohol in Dubai, from what age, and where is drinking allowed? The rules without the myths.

Dubai is often described as a "dry" city. It isn't. Adult tourists and residents can buy and enjoy alcohol here; you just need to know a few rules.
The age limit is 21
The legal age to buy and drink alcohol in Dubai is 21. It is checked everywhere: bars, shops and deliveries. The courier will ask for ID (passport or Emirates ID) and cannot hand over the order without it, even if you clearly look older.
Where you can drink
- At home, in your rented apartment or villa
- In licensed bars, restaurants and beach clubs
- On a private yacht you have chartered
Drinking in the street, on a public beach, in a park or in a taxi is not allowed, and being visibly drunk in a public place is an offence.
Where to buy
Alcohol is sold by licensed shops, bars and delivery services. Tourists only need a passport to buy. Residents can get a personal alcohol licence, which has been free since 2023.
The easiest option is delivery to your door: no hunting for a shop, the drinks arrive chilled, and you pay the courier in cash or by card.
What not to do
- 1Don't drive after even one drink. The UAE has zero tolerance for drink-driving.
- 2Don't drink in public places or carry open bottles outside.
- 3Don't buy alcohol for anyone under 21.
Follow these simple rules and your stay in Dubai will be relaxed. Rules can change, so check official sources before you travel.
